The Lusitania was a British ocean liner that was sunk on May 7, 1915 by a German U-boat off the southern coast of Ireland; 1,198 passengers and crew died. The Cunard Line launched Lusitania in 1906. When RMS Lusitania left New York for Britain on May 1, 1915, German submarine warfare was intensifying in the Atlantic. Erastus C. McAlpine, of Charlotte, N.C., worked in the Louise Textile Mill in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. He, with his wife, Jane, had nine children. Though McAlpine came from humble origins, he was well-informed of national and international events of his time, as his diaries reveal.
